Jane Jardine (known also as Jean or Jeanie) was born in 1823 at Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire, Scotland[1] and baptised on 16 March 1823 at Lochmaben[2]. She was the daughter of John Ross and Margaret Carruthers.
In 1841 she was living with her mother Margaret, a widow aged 40, four siblings - William (14), Margaret (10), Elizabeth (8) and Barbara (4) - and a male servant, John Beck, at Broadlydyke, Dumfriesshire[3]. She was aged 15 and born in Dumfriesshire. She probably was helping her mother around the home.
Marriage and Children
She married Robert Smith on 21 March 1845 at Lochmaben[4]. They had at least four children.
She was living with her husband, Robert, and three children - John (5), Jessie (3) and William (1) - in 1851 at Broadleydyke, Lochmaben[11]. She was 27 and had been born in Lochmaben. In 1861 she was living with her husband Robert and four children - John (15), Jessie (13), William (11) and Margaret (8) - at Priesthead, Dumfriesshire[12].
Death
She died on 31 August 1863 at Thistle Terrace, Lochmaben and was buried in Saint Mary Magdalene's Churchyard, Lochmaben[13]. The inscription reads:
In memory of Jane Ross wife of Robert Smith Mason Thistle Terrace who died at Lochmaben 31st August 1863 aged 41 years
Also the above Robert Smith who died there 12 December 1891 aged 75 years
Her death was registered at Lochmaben with her mother's maiden name given as Carruthers[14].
Research Notes
Trees on Ancestry list two other children, Agnes and Robert. I have not yet found any sources that connects Agnes to this family. There is a Robert Smith, aged 7 months, who was living with his grandmother in 1861 and listed as the son of her daughter, Barbara[15].
I have not found conclusive death dates for three of the children yet.
There is another Robert and Jane Smith in Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire[16], but this couple is older. In 1861 Robert is 63 and a woollen weaver and farmer of 10 acres. They have a grandson, Robert, born in 1853.
