Civil War Union veteran; he served in the Company K "Selma Legion" in the 19th Indiana Infantry, a regiment which was part of the famed "Iron Brigade of the West. He was mustered into the service as a Private on February 18, 1864. He was killed in action at the Battle of Laurel Hill on May 10, 1864. This battle was one of several battles that took place in and around the Spotsylvania Courthouse in Virginia between Grant's Army of the Potomac and Lee's Army of Northern Virginia during May 7-20, 1864.
