Biography

Nicolaas Coenraadsz Ruijsch was born in 1610 in Dordrecht, Holland, Dutch Republic. He studied law at Leiden University and began his career in public service at a relatively young age.

From 1640 to 1650 he served as pensionary of Dordrecht. In 1650, following the death of Stadtholder William II, he was involved in a diplomatic mission to Zeeland aimed at easing political tensions. He was later succeeded in Dordrecht by Johan de Witt.

In 1650 Ruijsch was unanimously appointed clerk (griffier) of the States General of the Dutch Republic, succeeding Cornelis Musch. He held this influential position until his death in 1670 in The Hague. He was regarded as a capable and respected statesman.

In 1637 he was granted noble status by King Charles I of England and also received a Danish noble title in the same year. [1]
