Biography

Susan was born on 8 May 1859 in Fremantle, Western Australia.[1]

A PIONEER PASSES - - DEATH OF MRS. ALFRED DOUST LINK WITH OLD BUNBURY [2]
On Sunday last Mrs. Alfred Doust, one of the oldest residents of the Bridgetown districts, breathed her last, after an illness extending over about a couple of mouths. The deceased lady, whose association with the district extended over sixty years, was possibly one of the best known, and most beloved links with those far-off days, which become increasingly remote with, the passing of our old pioneers. She made her first visit to Bridgetown per bullock waggon, from Bunbury, and took three or four days for the journey.
She was the third daughter of Lieut. W. A. Rummer, her father (being associated with the British forces sent to this State in the early days. She was born at Guildford 79 years ago. When she was 17 years of age she visited Bridgetown as the guest of her aunt.
It is worthy of note that she travelled to Bunbury by the old coastal steamer, Nemesis, and from there by road. She was married in the old school, which at that time did service as a school, church, and public hall, on October 6. 1879, the Rev. E. Withers being the officiating clergyman. Everything was, of course, most primitive in those early days, but this, notwithstanding, she early identified herself with the different movements which were formulated for the advancement of the district, and the encouragement of those social movements which are incidental to every community. She was the possessor of a quiet strength of character, sweetness and dignity, which won for her universal regard, and during the latter years of her life it is doubtful if anyone could have been surrounded with greater love and esteem.
The deceased lady was one of the foundation members of the Agricultural Society, and always took the greatest interest in the annual shows. She was also a foundation member of the Red Cross Society and was actively associated with that movement up to the time of her death. She was one of the most earnest workers in connection with the Anglican Church and had been a member of the Ladies' Guild from the inception of that movement until she passed away. But perhaps she will be best remembered by those who had the privilege of her acquaintance as a home-maker, and one who saw the brighter side of life, when perhaps the outlook did not look so bright to others.

The very deepest sympahy is felt for her husband, Mr. Alfred Doust at his great loss, and to her family. She leaves to mourn her loss Messrs W. A. Doust, R. H. Doust, L. H. Doust, Keith Doust, S. Doust and V. A. Doust and Ida (Mrs. John Muir), Mena (Mrs. Geo. E. Reading), Edith (Mrs. J. P. Bailey), Hettie (Mrs. S. R. Dyer), and Nelmore (Mrs. H. L. Digby).
Service at the Church
Prior to the funeral a service was held at St. Paul's Church, where the Rector (Rev. E. H. Strugnell), before a large gathering of friends, conducted an impressive service which was opened with the hymn "Abide With Me," this being the deceased's most favourite hymn. During his address the Rev. Strugnell referred feelingly to the late Mrs. Doust's connection with the church over a very long period and the active part that she had always played in the social life of the town, particularly in her younger years.
A very large number of friends attended at the cemetery to pay their last respects, the remains being interred in the Anglican portion of the cemetery, Rev. E. H. Strugnell conducting the last rites at the graveside.
Many beautiful floral tributes were placed on the grave.
The pall bearers were Messrs G. W. Hester, R. C. Williams, Alty Blechynden, L. A. McAlinden, P. A. Ewing, C. V. Draper, W. P. Scott and W. K. Walter.
The carriers were Messrs H. C. Davies, C. H. Blechynden, H. E. Armstrong and D. I. Palmer.
