Sarah Rebecca Runyan was born to Mary "Polly" Tidd and Daniel Runyan. Some of Sarah's children were born when the family lived in Roundhead Township, Hardin County, Ohio, near her parents and members of her mother's family.
Sarah spent most of her adult life with her husband Joseph Heaton in Putnam County, Ohio. They had several children including Samuel Jacob, William M., Margaret N., Louisa, Charles, and Mary Ellen. Samuel was born in Indiana, maybe Steuben County.
In 1910, Sarah and her husband set out to search for a child she had given up in Grand Rapids, Michigan before she married Joseph Heaton. On this journey, Joseph -- who was in his 90s -- brought along his ax since he could still split a cord of wood a day.
