THOMAS RUSSEL,[1] b. at Andover, 5 Jun 1765 of Thomas and Bethiah (Holt) Russell; d. at Temple, ME, 9 Jul 1863;[2] m. 10 Feb 1789, his fourth cousin once removed (through Holt lines), LYDIA ABBOTT, b. at Wilton, 1 May 1771 daughter of Jacob and Lydia (Stevens) Abbott; Lydia d. at Temple, 20 Jun 1855.
Thomas Russell along with his father-in-law Jacob Abbott, William Phillips, John Phillips, and Benjamin Ames purchased five townships in what would become Temple, Maine on 15 February 1794. By 1800, this group was referred to as “Jacob Abbott and Associates.” The Phillips brothers were merchants in Boston and Benjamin Ames was a tavern keeper in Andover so not likely to be themselves settlers on the land. Thomas Russell did settle there on the township that he purchased and in 1802 he was occupying the township land purchased by William Phillips.[3] Thomas and Lydia had married in Wilton and their older children were born there before relocating to the new settlement at Temple.
Lydia Abbott and Thomas Russell were parents of twelve children, the older children born at Wilton, New Hampshire[4] and the younger children at Temple, Maine. Thomas Russell lived to age 98. In 1860, he lived with his son Jacob A. Russell in Temple.[5]
