Biography
Charles was born in 1874 in Carisbrooke, Hampshire, the son of Fanny Ryall, a spinster. He was baptised in the Primitive Methodist Chapel in Newport on 07 Jun 1874.[1]
In the 1881 Census, he is living in Carisbrooke with "parents", Mark and Jane Ryall and a significantly older sister and a younger niece.[2]
In the 1891 Census he is a Militia Artillery Gunner at the Barracks, Sandown, Isle of Wight.[3]
He enlisted in the King's Royal Rifles in 1891 (Regimental No. 6460).[4]
Charles' movements after this are obscure. He appears as an engine-driver in Napier, New Zealand in 1916.[5] In the same year he appears to have unsuccessfully attempted to enlist in the Australian Imperial Force in Sydney, NSW.[6]
On 18 Dec 1917 he entered into an agreement with the Australian government to become an Australian War Worker under a joint Australian government/ British government scheme to supply labourers and navvys for the War effort in the UK. At the time he was single and was living in Kooroongarra, Queensland. He was issued with Australian War Worker Badge No. 1550 and embarked on the SS "Borda" on 31 Dec 1917 for England. However, he failed to return to the ship in Durban, South Africa on 26 Jan 1918 and was not heard of again.
