Biography
The son of John Ryan and Hannah (Oberdorf) Ryan, Mortimer was born in Orleans County in 1831. In 1850, his family lived in Ridgeway, New York, where his father worked as a public works contractor and Mortimer, at the age of 19, worked as a mason.[1] In 1855, living at home, Mortimer worked as a contractor.[2] He married Henrietta Downs (1832-1913), the daughter of Simeon Downs, Jr. and Sophronia Bailey. Their children included:

The family made their home in Ridgeway where, 1860, Mortimer was a grocer. Their household included a domestic servant, 25-year-old Bridget Murray from Ireland.[3] In 1865, his household included two servants, 26-year-old Honora Goold and 17-year-old Mary Mulligan, also immigrants from Ireland.[4] In 1870, Mortimer worked as a U.S. assessor; his household servant was 24-year-old Nora Rice, also an Irish immigrant.[5] In 1875, he worked as a quarry foreman.[6] In 1880, residing in Medina, New York, Mortimer as a rural route mail service; his widowed mother-in-law lived with the family then.[7][8]
By 1900, Mortimer had retired and was living with his wife and youngest daughter in a triplex at 57 Chestnut Street in Rochester, New York.[9] He passed away in Rochester at the age of 72[10] and is buried at Boxwood Cemetery in Medina, New York.[11]
