On 22 December 1915, Roderick enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Armidale, NSW. This states his next of kin was his father James Budsworth.[17]

On 5 November 1916, Roderick was a Private when he was killed in action in France aged 38. He is buried in the Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, Picardie, France. He is on the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour,[19] the Tamworth ANZAC Park Memorial Gates, and the Tamworth Public School WW1 Roll of Honour.[20]
The Tamworth Daily Observer has obituaries for Roderick from his father and mother.
"BUDSWORTH.— In loving memory of Private Roderick H. Budsworth, killed in action, Flers, France, 5th November, 1916. Inserted by his father, J. B. Budsworth."[21]
"BUDSWORTH.— In sad but loving memory of my dear son and brother, Private R. H. Budsworth, 1st Battalion, late of the 33rd Battalion, killed in action at Flers, 5th November, 1916. Previously reported wounded and missing. Inserted by his sorrowing mother and sister, Agatha." - from the Tamworth Daily Observer 05 Nov 1918."[22]
