Thankful was born on 31 July 1742 in Middletown, Connecticut, recorded as the daughter of Nath'll and Rebeckah Sage.[1] Her parents were Nathaniel Sage and Rebecca Hart.[2] She was baptized in the Congregational Church of the North or Second or Upper Ecclesiastical Society of Middletown (parish later to become Cromwell, Connecticut), on 8 August 1742.[3]
Thankful Sage married Samuel Smith, Deacon, of Sandisfield, Massachusetts, on 14 October 1772 at the Middletown church where she had been baptized.[2][3] She is mentioned as "daughter Thankfull Smith" in her father's will of 23 April 1779.[4]
Children of Deacon Samuel Smith and Thankful, recorded at Sandisfield, Massachusetts, were:[5]
Eunice, born December 28, 1773
Selah, born December 23, 1781
Lucy, born January 16, 1784.
Additional details for children of Samuel and Thankful, from an unidentified source:
Thankful's husband Deacon Samuel Smith died before 6 April 1784, the date of a bond letter in his probate file. The probate record includes a detailed description of the dower's right that was set off to Thankful Smith, his widow, on 15 September 1785.[6]
She married Benjamin Clark of Sandisfield, Massachusetts, about 1786 (based on the birth of daughter Thankful in 1787). They had one daughter, Thankful.
Thankful's husband Benjamin Clark died 7 December 1809 in Sandisfield.[7][8] "Beloved wife Thankful Clark" is mentioned in his will, which was written 16 April 1804, presented for probate on 6 February 1810, and proved at Lenox, Berkshire County, on 6 March 1810.[9][10]
Thankful (Sage) Smith Clark passed away in January 1815 in Sandisfield, Massachusetts.
