Biography

Rita lived in colonial New Mexico in the 1700s. Her birthdate and parents are not known. She was married to Antonio Martínez and they had at least four children baptized in Sandía Pueblo, close to Albuquerque, including:[1]

  1. Juan Ignacio, born in 1774
  2. Juan Ignacio, born in 1778
  3. María Manuela de los Reyes, born in 1782, twin of
  4. Manuel Francisco Esteban, born in 1782

Rita died before her husband remarried in 1788.

Research Notes

  1. I checked the baptism records for Albuquerque for 1744, 1745, and 1746 and there is no record of a baptism for a child named María Rita born to Antonio de Salazar and María de Torres. FamilySearch FHL microfilm 16,635.
  2. There is no record of Antonio and María having a daughter named María Rita, not even in published lists of their children such as Great New Mexico Pedigree Database or Nancy Lopez' Genealogy Site (Cybergata). There are Ancestry trees that have her as their daughter but none of them have any sources. I also checked María Rita de Torres. There is a María Rita Salazar living in the Albuquerque area who was born about 1745. I am going to add her information and sources to this profile. Unless I find something while I am doing research, I am going to detach Antonio de Salazar (abt.1688-abt.1768) and María de Torres (abt.1695-abt.1750) as her parents.
  3. In the 1750 Census for Belen, New Mexico, Antonio Salazar and María de Torres have a granddaughter named Rita living with them.[2] This might be her connection to them.
