Biography

William Jennings Salmon was born in about 1802. He was christened on 26 Dec 1802 at St Mary's Church in Thetford, Norfolk (Anglican). He was the son of Richard Salmon and Elizabeth (Faux) Salmon.

William became a paper-maker. He married Phebe Terry, probably before civil registration began in 1837.

Their daughter Phebe was born in 1854 in Bromley district, Kent.

Their son James was born in 1858 in Bromley district.

William died on 24 Oct 1876 at his home, Postford, Chilworth, aged 73. He was buried on 30 Oct 1876 in Nightingale Cemetery, Godalming, in the unconsecrated section. There were two paper mills at Postford; both produced banknote paper, and were sold by Sir William Magnay in 1865, with one of them closing ten years later because banknote production was declining.[1] Did William perhaps purchase one or both of these in 1865? The probate record gives his place of death as Postford, Chilworth, but his recent residence as Catteshall Mills (in Godalming). His burial record gives Chilworth as his place of death, and since no other address is mentioned this would normally also mean it was his home. His estate was valued at under £200, so perhaps he was manager rather than owner of the mill.

Phebe (senior) died 1 May 1891, aged 75, at her home in Hare Lane, Farncombe. She was buried on May 7th with her husband.
