Obituary

From her obituary: Dorothy Ruth Bowman, 83, passed away in her sleep on March 4, 2009 at the Kansas City Hospice House in KCMO due to complications to kidney failure. Memorial service will be on Sunday, March 8th from 3-5 p.m. at the McGilley & Sheil Chapel with inurnment at Floral Hills Cemetery on Monday the 9th at 12 p.m.

Ruth was born on April 18, 1925 in Latour, Johnson County, MO the second youngest of 7 children of Jacob Geoffrey Salmon and Ada May (Gamblin) Salmon. Her paternal grandparents were Alphonso Jacob Salmon and Mary Catherine (Moore) Salmon and her maternal grandmother was Ida Virginia (Boone) Gamblin.

Ruth grew up on various Missouri farms in Latour, Vista and Creighton. She was on the Creighton High School varsity basketball team for three years with her sister, Maxine. After graduating from high school in 1942, she went to business school, and later went to work for Abby Rents in Kansas City. In 1949, she was attending a hockey game at the Play-Mor arena, and met her future husband, Paul, who was attending the game as an off-duty Kansas City Police Officer. She married Paul on 13 Oct 1951 in Santa Cruz, Los Angeles Co, CA.

The joy of her later years were working jigsaw puzzles with her two grandchildren when they would visit. She wrote a couple of short stories about her life that were illustrated and placed in a permanent binder for her grandkids. Ruth liked to spend her summer days on her enclosed porch where she would greet visitors and keep an eye on her birdhouses. She loved her young grandkids and spent hours teaching them about counting, manners and a little bit about basketball. Ruth was loved by all who knew her and will be missed by everyone whose lives she touched.
