Obituary: Burl Raymond Sammons, 87, passed away in Baton Rouge, La., on January 31, 2014. He was born May 22, 1926 in Sedalia, Mo. He was the son of the late Harry Clay and Lila Burl (Porter) Sammons. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Yvonne Elizabeth "Betty" Hoffman Sammons. He was preceded in death by his parents and his two brothers Harry Clay Sammons, Jr. and Herbert Porter Sammons. Burl was a 1944 graduate of Smith-Cotton High School in Sedalia. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy during World War II. He served as a helmsman on a destroyer in the South Pacific. After the war, he continued his education at Tulane University in New Orleans where he received his degree in architecture. After graduation, he and his bride "Betty" moved to Sedalia. He was employed as an architect for Arthur Schwartz
In 1961, he founded his own commercial architecture firm of Sammons and Buller. He retired in 1985 and moved to Baton Rouge in 2006. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. He was an avid golfer, hunter, and fisherman. He also loved to travel. Burial will be at Crown Hill Cemetery in Sedalia, MO at a later date.
