Susan Elizabeth was a widow when she married Johnston D. Carson. Her first husband was Johnston's first cousin, John Finley Dysart. She bore several children, but only two (Georgia and Lalla Carson) survived to adulthood. She passed away in 1894 at the age of 50 It is not known what caused her death, but it is speculated that it was cancer.
Her husband, Johnston D. Carson, was about 71 years old at the time of her death and was unable to raised their two surviving daughters, Johnston's neice Elizabeth "Betty" (Langford) Cowan and her daughter Frances Elizabeth Cowan helped him raise them after Susan Elizabeth's death.
