Her name appears in her birth record and consistently in other records as Polly, but in the death record of her son Cyrus W. Bates it is given as Mary. The middle initial A appears in that record [2] and in her cemetery record,[3] but it is not found elsewhere.
Marriage
Polly Sawin was a resident of Sumner, Maine, when she married Cyrus Bates, also of Sumner, at Livermore, Maine, on 23 Mar 1823.[4] The 1892 death record of Cyrus W. Bates names his parents as Cyrus Bates and Mary A. Sawin and says that his mother was born at Livermore.[2]
Death
A record in the Nathan Hale Cemetery Collection says that Polly A. Bates died on 11 May 1856 at the age of 60 years, 4 days (which differs from her birth record by exactly one year) and is buried at West Paris, Maine.[3] She probably died at Sumner, where she was living in 1850.[5]
