Biography

Charlotte was born in Newport, Yorkshire, England, the daughter of William SCAUM (1808-) and Mary WRIGHT (1806-1871). She was baptised nearby in Eastrington in 1834.^[1][2]

In 1841 Charlotte lived in Selby, Yorkshire, with her parents.^[3] By 1851 they lived in Yearsley near Easingwold, Yorkshire.^[4]

Charlotte's daughter, Margaret Grainger Scaum, was born in 1851 in Yearsley.^[5] Charlotte married Margaret's father, James Grainger, later that year.^[6][7] He had lived next-door to the Scaums at the time of the 1851 census.

Charlotte and James and their family remained in Yearsley in 1861.^[8] In 1871 Charlotte lived in Newport.^[9]

By 1891 Charlotte lived in Burnley, Lancashire.^[10] She boarded with her daughter and son-in-law – Fanny and Richard Binney – in 1901^[11] and with her son, Richard Grainger, at 35 Laithe Street, Burnley, in 1911. She said that she had been married 60 years and had had 11 children, of whom four had died.^[12]

Charlotte died in 1913 at the age of 79.^[13]
