Unknown source - Scheetz - Riester John Baptist Scheetz 1st child to Antone Schutz and Chatherine Ruch was born June 18th, 1832 in Frieburg Germany. In 1852 John and his brother Lawrence came to America, crossing the ocean in a small sailing ship. The voyage took about 63 days before finally landing in New York harbor. From there John traveled directly to Sandusky City Ohio, where he found work in a blacksmith shop. He worked as a "smithy" for a few years when his employer induced him to move to the "wilds" of Put-in-Bay, (an island of Lake Erie). John was offered an acre of land for every day work that he could spare from the shop. The offer seemed promising until they arrived on the island and found that the living conditions were uninhabitable. John was united in marriage with Barbara Victoria Riester on May 16th, 1854 in Sandusky City, Erie County Ohio. The marrriage was solemnized by a Dovick, Minister of the Gospel. He Holy Angels Catholic Church was an established parish in Sandusky at this time, also there was never a priest by the name of Dovick stationed there. Barbara Victoria Riester was born December 11th 1928 in Baden Germany. She (and possibly her family) immigrated to America also in 1852. John and Barbara resided near Sandusky City for a time before moving to a forest- farm somewhere New Reigle, in Seneca County Ohio. Their home was a 2 room log cabin with a log stable room for their oxen. All the children were born in Ohio. In 1869 the family moved to Pulaski County Indiana where John purchased a 128 acres of land for a farm. ~ Photo attached of Barbara & John~
