Biography
Mary was born on August 14, 1827 in Geneva, upstate New York. After her mother died in 1838, she came to live with her maternal grandfather's family in Springfield, Massachusetts to finish her schooling at the "Old Seminary" with several cousins and other students from the town's leading families. Mary married Samuel Bowles in Geneva, New York in 1848. They resided in Springfield, Massachusetts, where he was the editor and publisher of the Springfield Republican. She passed away in 1893.
