The family of Mrs. Maria Schroeder Weising, who was laid to rest yesterday, have brought to light some interesting stories of her life. Mrs. Weising was in her 85th years, having been born at Richelsdorf, Germany, July 24th, 1845. Her parents were farmers. When nineteen years old she left her native land and came to America. Many interesting stories was she able to tell in later years to her youthful friends about her girlhood days, about the long ocean trip, lasting six weeks in a sailing vessel, about the few pleasures they had on this trip, and about the terrors and fears in the storms. Later in life she was able to make two trips to Europe and visit her native German cities, and compare the comforts and luxury of ocean travel in 1812 and that of 1865. Arriving at Tamaqua she saw the last of the Federal troops from the Civil War being discharged in that locality. In 1867 she married Herman Weising, a young man who had come to Tamaqua from Germany about the same time as she did. They made their home at Silver Brook and Tamaqua for about fifteen years, the young husband working in and about the mines. It was during this time that many stirring events took place in the coal regions, bringing changes that made working in the mines an uncertain means of living, so in 1882 they moved to Hazleton, making their home on South Cedar street. Later they bought a farm at St. Johns, where they lived until 1901, when they again returned to Hazleton, making their home the rest of their years at 119 East Diamond avenue. - PA Death Certificate: daughter of Casper Schrader and unknown mother, both born in Germany. She was widowed.
