Josiah was born in 1836, the youngest child of Broadstreet and Betsy (Segar) Scribner, in Unity, Maine, where he was raised.
We he was 25 years old, not long after the Civil War broke out, on August 21, 1861, Josiah enlisted in Company E of the 7th Maine Infantry Regiment. The regiment was initially sent to Washington D.C. and then on to Baltimore, Maryland. On October 15, 1861, Josiah died while at Baltimore, most likely from disease. This contention is based upon the fact that the 7th Maine did not see battle action until April-May of 1862 and also on the fact that of the over 300 deaths suffered by this unit during the war, over 200 were due to sickness and disease.
Josiah's body is buried at Loudon Park National Cemetery, Grave No. 1788, Baltimore, Maryland.
