Biography

Hiram was born in 1843, the son of Benjamin and Mary (Herrick) Scribner, in Washington County, Vermont, where he was raised.

When the Civil War broke out Hiram was 18 years old and enlisted in the Union Army on September 8, 1862. He mustered in on October 10 of that year as a Private in Company C of the 13th Vermont Infantry. Hiram fought during the Battle of Gettysburg with the 13th and then the whole unit mustered out of the service on July 21, 1863. He then re-enlisted on August 8, 1864, but this time he served as a Private with the 3rd Vermont Light Artillery Battery. The 3rd served in the defense of Washington D.C. and didn't see battle action. He was honorably discharged on June 15, 1865.

By 1866, Hiram had moved west to Wisconsin and then in around 1869 he moved on to Iowa. This is where, on November 22, 1872, Hiram married Geneva Hoskins, the daughter of James and Huldah Ann (Moore) Hoskins, in Woodbury, Iowa. They eventually settled in Monona County, Iowa, and had two children:

Benjamin Horace Scribner (1877–1947)

Mary Belle "Mamie" (Scribner) Manrose (1879–1920)

Hiram became a merchant dealing in home furnishings and besides being a salesman he worked as a carpenter and steam engineer to provide for his family.

Hiram lived to be 89 years old, passing away in 1933. Less than six months later Geneva died too in March of 1934. Their bodies are buried together in the Holton Cemetery in Holton, Jackson County, Kansas.
