John was born in about June of 1842, the son of Benjamin and Lydia (Lobdell) Scribner, in Hope, Hamilton County, New York, where he was raised and would live most of his life.
When John was about 21 years old he volunteered to fight for the Union during the Civil War. He served as a private in Company F of the 13th Regiment, New York Heavy Artillery, and saw action at the siege of Petersburg, Virginia, from 1864-1865. John mustered out June 28, 1865.
Late in 1865 John was back home and married Laura B. Fountain, the daughter of David Stephen and Elizabeth (Slack) Fountain, in Hope. This is where they settled and had the following children:
Elizabeth H. (Scribner) Resseguie (1868–1894)
Wallace Scribner (1874–after 1940)
John C. Scribner (1878–after 1930)
Charles A. Scribner (1879–1958)
Mary B. Scribner (1883–1918)
Russell E. Scribner (1889–1968)
John was a farmer to support his family. In their later years he and Laura depended upon their sons Charles and Russell to help on the farm. Laura died in 1922 at 77 years old while John lived to be 88 years old, passing away in 1931. Their bodies are buried together in the Hope Valley Willard Cemetery in Hope, Hamilton County, New York, along with several Scribner relatives.
