Biography

James born about 1485 was the second of that name and third son of John Scrymgeour apparent of Fardill.

James married firstly to Isabel Anderson.

His elder brother Master James Scrymgeour chantor of Brechin inherited the estate of Fardill on the death of their elder brother David in 1528. On 1 March 1528/9 Master James granted to James Scrymgeour and Isabel Anderson his spouse all and whole the third part of lands of Baltully and Kingarrock in Fife called Porterlands of Cupar. Their grandfather had held these lands and the office of Porter of Cupar Castle [1]

On 21 Jul 1531 James Scrymgeour apparent of Fardill witnessed a charter of the Constable of Dundee in favour of John Rolland and his wife Margaret Anderson. [2]

His wife Isabel Anderson appears to have died without issue.

On 2 Sep 1541, Master James Scrymgeour of Fardill precentor of Brechin resigned his fee of the lands of Fardill in favour of his younger brother also called James. [3]

In the entail of Dudhope dated 2 Mar 1541/42 James Scrymgeour fiar of Fardill is named after James Scrymgeour of Kirkton. [4]

About 1542, James married Marjory Mercer daughter to Lawrence Mercer and Janet Dundas.

James Scrymgeour and Marjory Mercer had issue:

  • James b. abt.1543 his heir mar. Barbara Moncur about 1562
  • Elizabeth
  • Katherine
  • Giles

On 29 Jun 1547 James Scrymgeour brother to David S of Fardell in parish of Caputh resigned his lands of Meikle Fardill and he and spouse Marjory Mercer were then granted conjunct infeftement of Meikle Fardill. [5]

James died about about 1547 - 48, probably a victim of the Battle of Pinkie. He was survived by his wife and children. As his children were still minors Gabriel Mercer was appointed Curator. [6]

His widow married Andrew Moncur of that Ilk about 1550.[7]
