Biography

James was born about 1543 son to James Scrymgeour of Meikle Fardill and his spouse Marjory Mercer daughter to Laurence Mercer of Meiklour.

His father died about 1547 and Gabriel Mercer was appointed his Curator. On his father's death James became heir apparent to his uncle Master james Scrymgeour of Fardill. He inherited the title of Fardill about 1550 on the death of Master James.

This laird of Fardill while still a minor married Barbara Moncur daughter to Andrew Moncur of that ilk and his spouse Margaret Scrymgeour daughter of David Scrymgeour of Fardill about 1561.

On 2 Nov 1563, James made a gift his lands of Meikle Fordill with consent of Gabriel Mercer his Curator, to his wife Barbara Moncur daughter of Andrew Moncur of that Ilk.^[1]

James Scrymgeour and Barbara Moncur had issue:

• James b abt.1565 his heir mar, Marion Ogilvy
• Margaret mar. Andrew Fletcher

James died about 1567. He was survived by his wife and young children.

His widow Barbara Moncur married secondly to William Hay of Gourdie who jointly took custody of Margaret Scrymgeour, her daughter. ^[2] Barbara's nephew Andrew Moncur apparent of that Ilk and James Scrymgeour of Glasswell were appointed Curators to James the young heir. ^[3]
