He was a tanner. In 1848 he moved to Equinunk, in Wayne County, Pennsylvania, which borders Delaware County, New York, and started a tannery. In 1852, he built a $30,000 tannery in High Lake, a village in the township of Buckingham; in 1856 he sold it and went back to Equinunk.
He and his wife had 11 children. Those still living in 1900 were:
Isaiah, a carpenter in Middletown, New York
Homer A., a railroad contractor in Grand Rapids, Michigan
Harriet S., married to Charles Rockwell of Honesdale, Pennsylvania
Elizabeth, who was married to Dr. Jonas Starnes, a surgeon in the Civil War who died at Burton Barracks, Missouri, in 1864
Charlotte A., married to Judge Thomas F Ham of Wauseon, Ohio
Florence R., married to William B Guinnip on March 24, 1876
He lived with his daughter from 1890 onward.
He was a Republican, a member of the Odd Fellows lodge in Bethany, and a Methodist.
