According to a small notation in a biography of the Biddle family,[1] John Scull was the father of early colonial immigrant Nicholas Scull. The Scull family were of Norman or Viking ancestry. Evidently, the Scull family entered England with William the Conqueror's Norman invasion of 1066. A knight named Sir John Scull accompanied Bernard de Neufmarch in the takeover of Wales at that time.[2] In 1930, a Scull descendant attempted to connect Nicholas Scull to his father in England and determined that Nicholas was a descendant of the branch of the Scull family that lived in Bitton, Gloucester.
In piecing together several documents, including the will of John Scull's brother-in-law, Jasper Farmer, it has been determined that John Scull's wife was Alice Farmer or Fermor.[3][4][5]
John Scull's son, Nicholas Scull, emigrated with his uncle Jasper Farmer's large family and many indentured servants from Ireland to William Penn's Pennsylvania in 1685 on the (ship) Bristol Merchant.[6] His uncle had obtained 5000 acres of land directly from William Penn. Unfortunately, he died before the ship reached America. The Bristol Merchant arrived in Chester, Pennsylvania on November 10, 1685 and Jasper Farmer's will was presented for probate on November 17, 1685 at Philadelphia. In the will, he gives a small bequest to his "sister Alice Scull."
More research is welcomed on the Scull family. Thank you for any help you can provide. It is entirely possible that John's name is inaccurate, as the Sir John Scull mentioned in the Biddle biography predated this person by a few hundred years.
