Biography

Priscilla Magdalene Shakespeare 7 March 1817 Birmingham. Magdalene the daughter of Wm Shakespeare of Birmingham in the parish of St Phillips… and of Ann his wife, who was the daughter of Edward and Ann Maid, was born on the seventh day of March 1817, and baptized 6 Nov 1846 at St Peter Street, Wesleyan in Soho. [Non-conformist registers]

Griffith Wilson Hughes of full age bachelor toy maker son of David Hughes carpenter married Magdalene Shakespeare of full age spinster, both of Myrtle Street, daughter of William Shakespeare smith on 26 Feb 1846, at St John the Baptist, Shoreditch, witness Dinah Shakespeare. In 1851 Griffith Hughes 22 was a toy manufacturer, born in London, and living at Compton Passage, St James Clerkenwell, with Priscilla 32 born in Birmingham, Griffith 4 and Priscilla 1, both born in London. Griffith Wilson Hughes died in 1855 at Clerkenwell.

On board "The Canterbury" Priscilla Hughes laundress 35, Joseph Hughes 12, Edward Hughes 10, Elizabeth Hawkes 34 cook, & Priscilla Hughes 18 servant. Priscilla married Richard Stokes 1808 -1886 on 17 Jan 1868 in Adelaide. “Married. Stokes – Hughes.On the 17th June 1868, at the residence of the Rev J G Wright, Richard Stokes of Payneham, to Priscilla Stokes of Payneham, relict of the late Griffith Hughes of London.” [South Australian Advertiser, 20 June 1868]

Priscilla Stokes of Elizabeth street, Payneham was buried on 27 Aug 1890 at Payneham. [Evening Journal, Adelaide, 27 Aug 1890]
