(1899). THE NEW PREMIER. (See portrait on page 38.) The Hon. William John Lyne, who has been sent for by the Governor to form a Ministry, was born at Apslaw, Tasmania, on April 6, 1844, and is therefore in his 56th year. He is the eldest son of John Lyne, of Gala, Tasmania, by his marriage with Lilias Cross Carmichael, daughter of James Hume, of Edinburgh, Scotland. At 20 years of age, he went to Queensland, and was among the first to take up squatting country on the Gulf of Carpentaria. He subsequently returned to Tasmania, and filled the position of clerk to the Glamorgan Municipal Council till 1875, when he proceeded to N.S.W., and started squatting pursuits on the Murray, near Albury. In 1880 he was returned to the Legislative Assembly for the Hume, and became Minister for Public Works in the first Dibbs Ministry, from November 2 to December 21, 1885, holding tho same position in the Jennings Ministry from February, 1886, to January, 1887. He was Minister for Lands in the second Dibbs Ministry from January to March, 1889; and held office as Minister for Public Works in the third Dibbs Ministry from October, 1891, to August, 1894. When that Government was defeated by Mr. Reid, and Sir George Dibbs and Mr. Barton retired from the House, Mr. Lyne became Leader of the Opposition, and held that position until he was displaced by Mr. Barton (who had been elected to the Assembly for the Hastings and Macleay) on account of the hostile attitude he had taken up towards the Commonwealth Bill during the first referendum. During the second federal campaign, Mr. Lyne, after an interval of indecision, again opposed the Amended Commonwealth Bill, notwithstanding that his constituency voted for it by an overwhelming majority. The resignation of Mr. Barton, as leader of the Opposition, the re-election of Mr. Lyne to that position, and his success in the motion of censure submitted by him in the Assembly, are matters of recent history. Mr. Lyne was married in 1870 to a daughter of Mr. Edward Carr Shaw of Glamorgan (Tas.). DEATH. 21 Jul 1903, Teranure, Cremorne Point, Mosman, New South Wales, Australia

DEATH. Lyne.— On July 21, at Sydney, Martha Coates, wife of Sir William John Lyne, and eldest daughter of the late Edward Carr Shaw, of Swansea, Tas.

DEATH. LYNE -July 21, at Teranure, Cremorne Point, Mosman, Martha Coates, beloved wife of Sir William John Lyne, of pneumonía, aged 60. The funeral will leave the above address at 2.30 p.m. this day for St. Thomas' Cemetery, North Sydney.

DEATH. The death was announced on Monday of Lady Lyne, wife of Sir William Lyne (Federal Minister for Home Affairs), at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Marcus M'Causland, Mosman. The news of Lady Lyne's death came as a great shock to Sir William's friends, as it was not generally known that his wife was ill. Death was due to pneumonia and erysipelas. The deceased lady was the daughter of Mr. Edward Carr Shaw, of Glamorgan, Tasmania, and married Mr. (now Sir William) Lyne on June 27, 1870.

OBITUARY. Death of Lady Lyne. — The many friends of Sir William Lyne throughout these districts will regret to learn the death of Lady Lyne, which took place on Monday last. The deceased lady was for many years a resident of this town and neighbourhood, and during that time won the esteem and warm personal regard of all with whom she was brought in contact. An ideal hostess, a kindly neighbour, a hearty supporter of all charitable and religious movements, and a sincere friend to all who enjoyed the privilege of her acquaintance, she became popular in the best sense of that term wherever she resided, and hundreds of her old friends will sorrow at her death, and sympathise with the yet greater grief of her husband. About a week ago Lady Lyne, who had previously been slightly indisposed, developed symptoms of bronchitis. She grew worse, and on Monday the illness took a more serious turn by the development of septic pneumonia. Dr. Rennie was called in to consult with Drs. F. W. Doak and Clubbe, but the patient sank rapidly, and death took place on Monday shortly before noon. Lady Lyne was the eldest daughter of Mr. Edward Carr Shaw, of Glamorgan, Tasmania. Her marriage to Sir William (then Mr.) Lyne took place on 27th June, 1870, and five or six years later she arrived with her husband in New South Wales. The news of her death was received by the New South Wales Government while sitting in Cabinet, and Sir John See at once sent a message of condolence on behalf of himself and his colleagues to Sir William Lyne. Sir William Lyne's bereavement was the subject of sympathetic comment in the House of Representatives on Tuesday. All the Ministers and many unofficial M's.P. sent telegrams of condolence.
