Research Notes

• The above reference to the Old Age Tax Assistance Records, 1934-1958 seem to document an old age assistance pension awarded to Cleo Nell Shelton from 1934 to 1946, which seems to leave some unanswered questions. First, with a documented birth date of 11 Jan 1913, she would have been 21 years old at the pension start date of 1934. Second, the pension seems to expire in 1946, which is probably at her death, at which time she would have been about 33 years of age. No documented death date has been found, nor was any record of a marriage.
• It should also be noted that the father figure Ollie died in 1924, which is verified because while he appears on the 1920 census from Warren township as the head of the family, on the 1930 census Hazel is shown as the head, not Ollie. A conclusion that can be drawn from above discussion could be that the loss of the father left the family financially troubled, and that the tax assistance might be some form of social assistance.
