James Sheppard was probably born about 1799 in Barford St. Martin Parish, Wiltshire, England, which is about 5 miles west of Salisbury on the road to Tisbury. He was a cooper in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, “for some years” before he moved to Shaftesbury to take over Thomas Garrett’s cooperage business in about 1837. Sometime between 1843 and 1851 he moved his business to Tisbury, Wiltshire, closer to his birthplace. He married Mary Ann Horder, of Salisbury, in 1829.
Do not confuse this James Sheppard with: 1. James Sheppard, miller, of Bishopstone, Wiltshire, son of William and Peggy Sheppard, baptized in Tisbury on September 12, 1801. His wife was Elizabeth. 2. James Sheppard, baptized in Fordingbridge on March 15, 1795, the son of Thomas and Mary Sheppard. He was a millwright, married to Sarah. 3. James Sheppard of Fordingbridge, born about 1800 in Hale, Hampshire. He was an agricultural laborer, married to Hannah.

From the Salisbury and Winchester Journal - September 26, 1836: "Fordingbridge. To Coopers. Messrs. Hannen are directed to dispose of the very excellent business for some years past carried on by Mr. Shepperd, who leaves in consequence of being about to enter on a more extensive business at Shaftesbury, which was conducted by the late Mr. Garrett at that place for many years. The stock to be taken at a valuation. For further particulars, apply to Mr. Wm. Horder, grocer, Milford-street, Salisbury, or Messers. Hannen, Fordingbridge. Letters post paid." Note: James Shepperd was a cooper in Fordingbridge where he was born. In 1829 he married Mary Ann Horder, sister of William Horder, grocer in Milford Street, Salisbury. William’s father-in-law, Thomas Garrett, was a cooper and publican in Shaftesbury, Dorset. In later life Thomas generally described himself as a publican so he may have been getting out of the cooperage business at about this time. Thomas didn’t die until about 1853 so the word “late,” used in 1836, doesn’t describe him very well, but it may have been meant to indicate that he was the former proprietor of the cooperage.
From the Salisbury and Winchester Journal - June 4, 1853: "Wanted,—An apprentice to a cooper: a youth not under 15 years of age. A small premium required. For particulars, apply to J. Sheppard, Tisbury, or to W. Horder, grocer, Salisbury."
From the Salisbury and Winchester Journal (Salisbury, Wiltshire, England) - 2 July 1864: "Deaths. On the 24th ult., at Tisbury, after a short illness, Mr. James Sheppard, much respected, aged 67."
