Wilkins Updike Sherman was born on October 15, 1812 in North Kingstown, Washington, Rhode Island, United States, son of Nathaniel John Sherman (1777–1856) and Nancy Gardiner (~1781–1829).

Wilkins married Eveline Christina Gnann (born on March 15, 1815 in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia; daughter of Jacob Gnann and Christina (Rahn) Gnann). Their son was Jonathan Rahn Sherman (1839–1924).

US Civil War

Wilkins U Sherman enlisted in Co. D, Capt. Saxon's Co., Georgia Mounted Infantry, 10th Battallion, Georgia State Guard, on 3 Apr 1863 for a period of six months. Capt. R.C. Saxon's company was formed for local defence and to serve in all that portion of Georgia west of the Chattahoochee River. 5 Sep 1863-4 Feb 1864. ^[7]
