George Shilling was born on 3 January 1895 in Gosport, Hampshire, England.[1][2] He was the son of Thomas Shilling and Ellen Prince. He was the brother of Ellen Shilling, Thomas Shilling, Emma Shilling, William George Shilling, Charles Shilling, James Shilling, Richard Shilling, Alice Shilling, Frederick Shilling, Albert Shilling, and Hilda Shilling.
In 1901, he and his family had moved to Alverstoke, Hampshire, just a short distance from Gosport and not far from Portsmouth.[3]

George's father, Thomas Shilling, died in 1910.[4] By the following year, he was living with his sister Emma and her husband, Charles Montgomery Grimes, along with two brothers and two sisters. His occupation was an errand boy for a butcher's shop.[5]
