Elias was born in 1720, the son of John and Elizabeth (Kirtland) Shipman, In Hartford, Connecticut Colony, where he was raised.
In around 1744, Elias married Rebecca Willard, the daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Stillman) Willard, in Saybrook, Connecticut.
Elias and Rebecca would have the following children:
Rebecca (Shipman) Parmelee (1745–1809)
Elias Shipman II (1747–1823)
Joseph Shipman (1749–1784)
Elias was a sea captain and evidently met his fate in Antigua, West Indies in late 1748 where he was either lost at sea or died of some other malady. He left Sarah with three young children (the youngest not yet born).
No burial records could be found.
