Biography

Thomas Shipp was born in Marshall, Michigan, in 1845, but that year the family moved back to their farm in Emmet Township, Calhoun County, Michigan. In 1855 they moved back to Marshall and in 1862 to a farm in Eckford Township, Calhoun County, where Tom spent the rest of his life. He married Frances Sophia "Fannie" Skinner in 1871. With his mother he managed the farm during his father's years of decline, though in 1880 it was divided such that he and Frances had the southern 160 acres. He served as chairman of the county board of supervisors and in other posts. They were members of the West Eckford Methodist Church. Frances died in 1901. His daughter Bessie cared for him in his later years. He died in 1930; the newspaper headline was "Eckford's Grand Old Man Passes Away." They are buried in the West Eckford church cemetery with his parents.
