Biography

Eli was born in 1818 in Maryland. He was the son of Samuel Sigler and Ann "Nancy" Taylor.[1]

His first wife was Mary Cornish. They were married May 13, 1843.[2] Together they had 7 children:

  1. Sarah Sigler
  2. John Anderson Sigler
  3. Christopher Columbus Sigler
  4. Francis Sigler
  5. Caroline Matilda Sigler Brown- likely named after her aunt Caroline Matilda (Sigler) Walton (abt.1830-1893)
  6. Bernice Sigler Goff
  7. Clinton DeWitt Sigler- likely named after New York Governor Charles DeWitt Clinton (1769-1828)

Eli and Mary lived in Hobart Indiana until 1852, when they became some of the earliest settlers in Hebron.[3] He started out as a farmer.[4] Later he opened a dry goods store.[5][6][7]

His second wife was Hannah Allen. They were married December 11, 1861.[8] Together they had 7 children:

  1. Freddie Sigler- died young
  2. Nettie Sigler- died young
  3. Edward Sigler
  4. Bartlett Woods Sigler- likely named after his uncle Bartlett Woods (1818-1903)
  5. Mary Lucena Sigler Nichols
  6. Ira Levitt Sigler
  7. Charles Sigler

In about 1867 he built a house on Church Street in Hebron, Indiana which is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The architect was Lyman Dunn.[9]

He died on December 24, 1904 in Hebron, Porter, Indiana, United States. [10]
