He enlisted in the union army in 1861 in Missouri.^[4][5]

Samuel died on 6 Apr 1862 in Pittsburg Landing, Hardin County, Tennessee aged 53.^[6]

Samuel was in a military pension record 12 Dec 1862 when his wife filed for a pension on his military service. He was in the B 21" Mo Infantry. His child, Lafayette, also filed on 18 Nov 1879. ^[7]
