334. AUGUSTUS WHITMAN, b. Dec. 9, 1843, Steuben Co., N.Y. He attended school in Lyons, N. Y., and after 1861 in Tecumseh, Mich. He enlisted in Co. E, 18th Mich. Inf., July, 1862; mustered in Aug. 26,.sent to Ky., stationed at Lexington, Nov. 1 to Feb. 21. He had been detailed for Secretary for Medical Director of Ky. His Reg. sent to Nashville in April, 1863, he was detailed as Clerk in Provost Marshal's office. In 1864, he was promoted 2nd Lieut. of Battery A, 2nd U. S. Col. Art.; six months later made Adjutant of the Art. Brig, at Nashville; honorably discharged March, 1866. He took a full course in the Business College at Detroit; then was made clerk in a large lumber yard; he soon started a planing-mill, and door and sash factory at Tecumseh, operating successfully ten years. He m. Cynthia M. Goodwin, Sept. 22, 1870, in Detroit. She was b. June 28, 1850, Royal Oak, Mich. Selling his planing-mill he engaged in the wholesale lumber trade, and making furniture, till 1883; then selling out the furniture he spread his lumber dealing all over Mich. and Northern Wis., handling basswood mostly, furnishing timber to near fifty mills; he is now known in Northern Mich. as the "Basswood King". He has lumber-yards in Detroit, Tecumseh, and elsewhere, handles about twenty car-loads monthly. He has a pleasant home, is Prohibition, is Director of Mich. Flooring Co. and Secretary Tecumseh Celery Co. Three ch. [1]
