"Gwendoline Smallman was my maternal grandmother, my grandfather was Charles Melbourne Johnston, they met pre WW1 working in a legal office, probably 1913. He volunteered and was off to every bad place the A.I.F. went, shot, gassed, blown up, he survived, rose through the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel, awarded the D.S.O., decorated by George at Buckingham Palace. They rekindled their romance when he returned in 1919 and at some stage Charles proposed but the marriage was rejected by Gwendoline`s brothers as Charles was of Aboriginal descent and on 20/2/1921 my mother was born in Seymour and raised by nurses. Gwendoline named her Cicely Mary, C.M. after him. According to family history Gwendoline then became involved with an Italian and it ended badly. Mother and daughter became reacquainted around the 1952 and Gwendoline was presented as a great aunt," Disclosure about the relationships came from the authors father after his mothers death.
