OBITUARY. OLD RESIDENT PASSES. The Late John Henry Smith. Mr. John Henry Smith, of 12 Moscow Street, Peterborough, passed away on Tuesday, at 7.30 p.m., after being confined to his bed for six weeks, which was his first serious illness. He celebrated his 73rd birthday in January last and his golden wedding in June of last year. He was born at Kingston, South Australia, in 1864, being the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Smith. He started work in the S.A. Railways as a cleaner at Kingston, when only 11 years of age. He transferred to Mount Gambier as a fireman, and, in 1900, came to Peterborough, remaining in the railway service until he retired at the age of 65 years. He worked on all the northern lines and was driver on the Broken Hill express for many years. During his 8 years' retirement he was a popular figure at "Bill Smith's" garage (now owned and conducted by his younger son, Mr. Alf G. Smith). Mr. Jack Smith, proprietor of the garage at the west end of Main Street, is his other son. Miss Ada Smith, of Adelaide, is a daughter. On 29th July, 1886, deceased married, at Kingston, the second daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. S. North, who was born at Port McDonnell on April 11th, 1867. The officiating minister was the Rev Woods (Anglican). Mr. Smith was of a very happy nature, full of fun at all times. He took a keen interest in the town and was an active supporter of all things appertaining to its welfare. He was very fond of sport, particularly cycle racing, horse racing, &e. He was a committeeman of St. Patrick's Day Sports and the Railway Picnic, in fact no greater enthusiast existed in these two popular annual fixtures than "John Henry," as he was known to his intimate friends.. He was a foundation member, in 1916, of Nelia. Lodge, No. 15, G.A.B., R.A.O.B., Peterborough. The funeral, which took place at Peterborough yesterday afternoon, was conducted by the Rev. Hogan, of St. Peter's Anglican Church, and was very largely attended, the wealth of floral tributes bearing eloquent testimony of the popularity of the deceased, and the deep sympathy felt for the bereaved widow, sons and daughter.
