J. Delph married America Smith 28 Jun 1855 in Clay Co., Kentucky. He was 23. She was 16.[1]
1860: James (27) and America (22) were enumerated in Manchester, Clay, Kentucky with children Willard (3) and Ellen (2 months).[2]
America became a widow in 1861 when James died of illness from serving in the Civil War.
In 1870, she was still widowed, still in Manchester with the following children:[3]
William (13; b 1857)
Ellen (10; b 1860)
Ann (5; b 1865)
Robert (3; b 1867)
Note that the last two children were born years after America's spouse James had died.
America, widow, continued to have children. In 1880 she was enumerated as a widow, 41, head of household with the following relations -- all Delph unless otherwise noted:[4]
Millard [William of previous censuses] (22; b 1858); son
Ellen (19; b 1861); daughter
Anne (16; b 1865); daughter
Robert (13; b 1867); son
Olley (7; b 1873); daughter
Burton (2; b 1878); son
Thomas J (2; b 1878); grandson
Jane (1; b 1879); grand daughter
Lydda Senters (40; b 1840); cousin; widowed

Liz, I was working on a different family, adding sources to Milton B Smith (1816-1888); in the 1850 census, Milton was head of household in Clay Co., Kentucky; included in the family is a possible child, America Smith, 11 (therefore born about 1839). Not sure how common the name America was at the time. But if rare, Milton could be a candidate for America's father.
