She was the oldest daughter of P.H. Smith, pioneer building contractor and sawmill owner of Grand County.

She came to Breckenridge as a small girl with her parents P.H. and Mary Ellen (Adkins) Smith, moving from there to Hot Sulphur Springs in 1882 and made this her home, thence to Grand Lake in 1884 and back to Hot Sulphur Springs in 1885 and made this her home for the remainder of her life. She was a member of the Christian Church.

Mabel was united in marriage to William J. (Ute Bill) Thompson on Dec. 25, 1893, who preceded her in death in 1926. To this union were born five sons. Frederick C. William P. Otto W. Marion L. of Hot Sulphur Springs; and John H. of Denver.
