Biography

The son of Devereaux Smith and Esther (Riches) Smith, Gustavus Smith was born in Monroe County, New York,^{[citation needed]} shortly after the arrival of his family from England. His family made their way west, taking up residence in Milford Township, Michigan.^[1][2] By 1880, they lived in Tyrone Township, Michigan, in Livingston County.^[3]

Gustavus Smith married Alice Elizabeth Betts (1854-1930), the daughter of Daniel Betts, Jr., also an immigrant from England, marrying around 1885.^{[citation needed]} They made their home in the village of Holly, Michigan, in Oakland County, where in 1900, Gustavus worked as a livestock dealer.^[4] In 1910, his occupation was listed as "drover."^[5] By 1920, Gustavus and Alice lived in Detroit, Michigan, where he had moved his livestock operation.^[6] By 1930, they had returned to Holly, Michigan where, at the age of 74, Gustavus listed his occupation as a dealer in livestock and wool.^[7]

Alice Smith passed away later in 1930; in 1940, Gustavus lodged with widow Ida Jones, residing in Rose Township, Michigan.^[8] Gustavus Smith passed away in Rose Township, Michigan^[9] and, according to his death certificate, is buried at Lakeside Cemetery in Holly Township, Michigan.
