James Smith ^[1] was born in about 1812 in Farmingham, Kent ^[1], the son of Thomas Smith, a miller. ^[2]

After the death of his first wife, he married Maria Vigis on 4th December 1972 at St Nicholas, Plumstead. ^[2]

They lived in Plumstead, London, in 1881. ^[1]

He died before 1891.
