Research Notes
When speaking on the telephone to Roy Gosling (my cousin) he told me this story.
Sid, in his youth, was sent for piano lessons by his mother. After several months had passed, she was concerned that he was only able to play simple scales. He didn't give a satisfactory explanation, so she went to take the piano teacher to task. She was told he had only ever been for one lesson and never went back. He then admitted that piano lessons hadn't really appealed to him, so he had been taking boxing lessons instead . He was apparently very good at boxing because when he later joined the Royal Navy, he won the middleweight title.
