LAWRENCE HENRY SMITH
LAWRENCE HENRY SMITH, age 81, of Idaho Falls, ID, passed away on Sunday, December 26, 2010 at home where he resided for 40 years.
He was born in Lake Linden, MI on April 12, 1929, to Stuart G. Smith and Mabel F. Piché Smith. He attended St. Cecelia School in Hubbell, and Lake Linden Hubbell High School. He graduated from St. Vincent High School in Detroit, MI in 1947. He worked at Michigan Bell and Parke Davis after high school while attending technical schooling in Detroit. He was drafted into the U. S. Army in 1951, served in Korea in the 45th Infantry Division and was honorably discharged in 1953. He entered the University of Detroit in 1953 and graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He married Mary Lynn Coté on August 31, 1957 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Lapeer, MI. In 1962 he graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY with a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering. Larry was an electrical and nuclear engineer for his entire career, retiring in 1989 from the Idaho National Laboratory. During his retirement he dedicated much time to woodworking, machining, and many other crafts, as well as genealogy research for his own family and several others.
He is survived by his wife, Mary L. Smith of Idaho Falls, ID; and children, Lawrence P. (Jean T.) Smith of Ballston Lake, NY; Thomas B. Smith of Centennial, CO; Marilynn C. (Jim R.) Ruybal of Albuquerque, NM; David S. (Virginia L.) Smith of Coraopolis, PA and Magnolia, TX; Stephen J. (Marilyn R.) Smith of West Jordan, UT; Kathryn M. DelaRosa of Idaho Falls, ID; and Carol M. (Omar V.) Mejia of McAllen, TX. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, Matthew M. Ruybal, Christa L. Wilson, Marjorie G. Smith, Marissa J. Smith, Kevin R. Ruybal, Kyle H. Smith, Mary Katherine Smith, Ryan T. DelaRosa, Joanna E. Smith, Madeleine T. Smith, Andrew S. Smith, Marie E. Mejia, Emily S. Smith, Christian M. Mejia, Amy T. Ruybal, Bethany C. Smith, and Lauren I. Ruybal. He is also survived by his siblings, G. Stuart (Toni) Smith of Chicago, IL; Helen A. (Robert) Kuhn of Interlochen, MI; Brian J. Smith of Evanston, IL; Paul N. (Jeannine) Smith of Attica, MI; Barbara J. (Dan) Devine of Beverly Hills, MI; and Marion C. (George) Light of Norwood, MI. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Phyllis B. Coté of Lapeer, and many loving brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Joanna Louise Smith, his brother, Robert F. Smith and wife, Kitty Smith, and his brother, James P. Smith.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Imlay City, MI on Friday January, 7 at 12 noon. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Church prior to Mass, beginning at 10:30 am. Burial will follow in Mt. Loretto Cemetery, Lapeer, MI. Memorial contributions for Holy Masses for Lawrence Smith may be made to: Our Lady of Clear Creek Abbey, 5804 W. Monastery Road, Hulbert, OK 74441. Please print "For Masses" on envelope and on check.
