Biography
Sarah was born in Franklin Township, Warren County, Pennsylvania in 1837. She is the daughter of Benjamin Snelle and Catherine Shaffer. On June 4, 1857, she married Henry Otis Whitney, son of Joshua Whitney and Melissa Patten. The marriage took place in Greene County, Ohio. [1] Henry and Sarah had the following five children:
1. Elmer Horton Whitney, b. 25 Jun 1858, Dayton, OH; d. 27 Sep 1936, Toledo, OH; m. 1884, Warren Co., OH, Louisa "Lulu" Korkcamp.
2. Ira Napoleon Whitney, b. 25 Apr 1861, Franklin, OH; d. 22 Feb 1953, Toledo, OH; m. 20 Feb 1896, Fulton Co., OH, Millie E. Whitaker.
3. Mary Cornelia Whitney, b. 19 Feb 1864, Franklin, OH; d. 12 Apr 1950, Los Angeles Co., CA; m. 13 Mar 1904, Lucas Co., OH, Curtis S. Wise.
4. William Carver Whitney, b. 23 Jun 1868, Franklin, OH; d. 12 Nov 1944, Toledo, OH; m. 11 Nov 1893, Lucas Co., OH, Louise J. Maag.
5. Carl Whitney, b. 14 Oct 1875, Franklin, OH; d. 18 Nov 1960, Compton, Los Angeles Co., CA.
Henry passed away in 1886 in Memphis, Tennessee, according to the Whitney Research Group. Sarah passed away in 1923 in Los Angeles County, CA where she had been living with her daughter Cornelia and son Carl. Sarah is buried in Inglewood Park Cemetery, Inglewood, CA. [2]
