Florence was a passenger on the Port Hunter when it was torpedoed and sunk by the German U-boat U-582 on 12 July 1942. The ship sank within two minutes owing to a series of explosions. Of 89 known persons on board only 3 men survived. They were rescued by HMS Rother (K 224).
She had been serving in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) in Britain during World War II and was returning to New Zealand to join her husband when she died.
