Biography

Augusta Ann Hollis and James Snowden married in 15 June 1845 and had a daughter born in Plymouth 3 August 1846, possibly at the house of Augusta's father, James Turner, at the settlement of Parting Ways.[1]

Research

Records for the daughter are minimal. Augusta's grandmother's sister, Ellen (née Stephens) Quam Talbot, has a girl named Mary of the right age living in her household. This profile assumes those records belong to the daughter of Augusta and James; however, it's uncertain, especially as the last names do not match (though census records are sometimes inconsistent).

Census records

1850 US Census - not yet found. Her father had escaped from slavery in Maryland, and because of the Fugitive Slave Law (passed in 1850), the family may have used an assumed name and/or moved to Canada.

1855 Massachusetts State Census - Her parents, James and Augusta lived in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts[2]. However, since Augusta was dying of consumption[3], which was highly contagious, Mary may have been sent to live with her great aunt Ellen in Kingston, about fives miles north.

1855 Kingston, Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA[4] Discrepancies: Mary's last name is given as Williams instead of Snowden, and Charles's last name is given as Warren instead of Quam. The birthplace of Ireland is implied by the ""copying from lines above, but all four people rae listed in other records as being born in Massachusetts.

  • Ellen Talbot 59, mulatto
  • Peter Talbot 40, black, laborer (husand of Ellen)
  • Charles H Warren 41, black, laborer (probably son of Ellen)
  • Mary E Williams 9, mulatto (possibly daughter of James and Augusta and great-niece of Ellen)

1860 Census - not yet found

1865 Massachusetts census record in the town of Plymouth with three Bemans and Ellen Talbot

  • Mary E. Beman (b. 1845 in Massachusetts, mulatto, married female)
  • Charles Beman (b. 1844 in Connecticut, mulatto, married male) Laborer
  • Mary E. S. Beman (b 1864 in Massachusetts, mulatto, single female) - child of Mary and Charles
  • Ellen Talbot (b. 1795 in Massachusetts, black, widowed female) - Mary's grandmother's sister.

Death

No records have been found for Mary after the 1865 census. Her daughter Mary Beman appears in the 1870 Census with another family, and Charles remarried c. 1870, so it's likely Mary died between 1865-1870.
