Biography

Adam Snyder was born 1832 in Crab Bottom, Pendleton Co. (now Highland Co.), Virginia and he died in Lewisburg, Greenbrier Co., West Virginia. He was a son of John (1791-1862) and his second wife Elizabeth (Halterman) (1808-1869) Snyder. Adam married Henrietta Harrison Cary June 1, 1869 in Lewisburg. They were the parents of nine children.

In 1882 Adam Clarke Snyder was appointed to the Supreme Court of West Virginia. In 1884 he was nominated by the Democratic Party and elected to serve a twelve year term. Before resigning in 1890, he served as president of the court. He resigned to give more attention to his business interests.

Adam Snyder's formal education began at the Mossy Creek Academy in Augusta Co., Virginia. He prepared for undergraduate studies at the Tuscarora Academy in Juniata Co., Pennsylvania and then entered Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1856. He transferred to Washington College in 1857. In Lexington, Virginia he studied law under Judge J. W. Brokenbaugh. Adam Snyder was admitted to the Virginia bar in 1859 and then opened a law practice in Lewisburg. By 1860 he was a deputy United States marshal, based in Lewisburg and was named prosecuting attorney for Highland Co., Virginia in 1861.

During the Civil War Adam Snyder was a captain in the 27th Virginia Infantry, Confederate service. He was wounded in 1861 and was captured and imprisoned from 1863-64. Because of disbarment due to his Confederate service, he took up journalistic work until the disbarment was lifted by the United States Supreme Court. He then resumed his practice of law. Adam Snyder was one of the organizers of the Bank of Lewisburg.
